It sounds like a cat paradise; a place which is designed to suit every cats’ need, a place full of cat food, cat toys and other cat friends, a place with no pestering dogs. But this is not just a cat dream, at Mt Eden’s Auckland Cat Practice, it is a reality.
“The practice was founded so that cat owners could bring their cats here and know that everything is set up just for cats and the veterinarians are concentrating just on cats. It’s quite unique,” said a director of the practice and owner of five cats, Darren Fry.
The practice, which was established a year and a half ago after it changed names and owners from Mary Austin’s Cat Practice, is Auckland’s only veterinary clinic designed specifically for cats.
“The cat only concept has taken off overseas and we’re hoping we’ll see it grow here in New Zealand too,” Darren said.
The clinic offers a range of services for cat owners, from surgery and consultation to cat grooming and boarding accommodation.
The veterinarians that work at the practice are all self confessed cat lovers. A team such as this is an essential part of their aim in helping cats attain optimum health and providing a stress free environment.
Cats are brought into the clinic for a variety of reasons. They go for routine check ups but also for more serious reasons such as severe congestive heart failure or injuries from traffic accidents. “We’ve seen a lot of very sick animals here,” Darren said.
Although the cat practice has attracted clients from all over Auckland, the staff have noticed that the Mt Eden community members are particularly fond of their cats.
“Our Mt Eden clients always want the best for their pets,” said Darren. “And it’s great to see these people that genuinely care for their cats, because cats are special.” (2006)
