A flood and a power cut is never a good way to start off your first month of business. But for Mt Eden's new gift and home ware shop, Accent on Living, this was exactly what occurred after they moved in, in May of this year. "With all these disasters, I wondered if I was getting a sign from somewhere," laughed owner Rhonda Scott.
But the gods must have been wrong, as Rhonda said that despite her rocky start she now couldn't be happier with how the business is doing.
The new Mt Eden shop offers a range of gift and home ware products, from retro record players and telephones to wall decorations and edible cocktail flowers. "I try to stock quality goods that are different at vastly different price ranges so that there's something for everybody," said Rhonda. Before opening her shop Rhonda owned her own catering company and felt that it was a natural progression to go from the kitchen into the home ware industry. "My passion has always been food," said Rhonda. "So now I'm greatly concerned that if I'm not careful my kitchen products will over take the rest of my shop."

The move to Mt Eden was not something new to Rhonda because when she first shifted to Auckland around 20 years ago, her first job was surprisingly at a pharmacy in the village. "It's quite unbelievable that I've managed to do a full circle. But it means I am very much at home here," she said.
For Rhonda it has been her customers that have made her job enjoyable so far. "It's the people here that I love. Since I've been here I know far more people by name and far more about them than I ever did anywhere else." (2006)
