Bakers Delight

by Charlotte Coyle

Teresa Abraham After ten years, Bakers Delight in the Mt Eden village is in new hands.
Malay and Meghna Dave bought the bakery from long time owners Gary and Doreen Austin in May this year. Malay says he became interested in the business because as a chef he had a passion for baking and was looking for a change from pizza restaurant Dominos where he was working at the time.
The couple also fell in love with the Mt Eden village, says Malay. "My first impression of Mt Eden was that it was a real-time Kiwi area. I knew I would really like working here." Malay says that even with their change of ownership the bakery has been kept basically the same. Bakers Delight Mt Eden still offers everything from traditional to gourmet and specialty breads. Malay says their sweet breads are especially well made, with his favourites being the apricot delight, berry scroll and the apple-walnut log.
Bakers Delight
As one of three bakers at Bakers Delight Malay starts work at 2 in the morning and bakes through till 11am. Although these hours would not appeal to everyone, Malay says there are advantages. "I have actually come to like working through the night. It means the afternoon is all yours."
Malay says Bakers Delight differs to other bakeries in that they bake all their products fresh everyday, so that bread is only ever sold on the day it was made.
Anything that is left over at the end of the day goes to charity. The Mt Eden Bakers Delight has a list of different charities that come to collect their leftover bread. These charities include Drug Auckland, Low Income Immigrant Families, Pacific Women's Group and Methodist Mission Northern.

Malay says a strength of the bakery is its strong commitment to customer service. This commitment was recently recognized as one of Bakers Delight Mt Eden's long time workers Teresa Abraham was awarded the Leslie Gillespie outstanding customer service award. "This award was judged throughout New Zealand and Teresa was found to be the best, so it is a very big achievement," says Malay. "We are very proud to have Teresa on our staff." (2007)
